“The grass withers and the flowers fall, but the word of our God stands forever.” (Isaiah 40:8)
God is one reality that does not change. His character and directives are sure and perfect. There is no need for second thoughts. He is and has the answers. The grass and flowers refer to humankind how it comes and goes. It is fragile and limited but God is over and beyond all of that.
He is eternal and has something to say. He is not silent with His creation. He creates simply by speaking. And everything He speaks is for humankind’s benefit. How wonderful is that?
We are living in a day when this truth is challenged by many in society. God’s Word doesn’t carry the weight it used to with many. Humankind has turned again to its favorite idol of self enlightenment.
Humankind now knows better than God what is best. Humankind is its own god and master of the universe. These are sad days, but not unfamiliar compared to the past.
The true church has had to always struggle against idolatry within and without. There is always that corrupting element of the devil at work to undermine the church. Of course we know that all his attempts will fail but in the meantime many will be led astray by other words than God’s.
Heavenly Father, we like this reassuring word that Your Word is eternal. We can depend on You when we cannot depend on our self.
We can depend on Your promises when we cannot depend on our own. Your grace makes all the difference between our following you or not.
Give us more grace Lord.
In Jesus’ name. Amen.
