If you’re the parent, or grandparent of a newborn or toddler, don’t blink. If you do you’ll realize they are now grown and you’ll wonder where all that time went. I’m not trying to sound philosophical or melodramatic but even though it isn’t a landmark birthday our son just Zak turned 22. Where have 22 years gone?
Our grandparents, maternal and paternal, used to tell me how fast time would march by if we weren’t careful. Our parents echoed those pronouncements when we started our family. Of course, since I know everything I discounted those warnings. I wish I had listened. There are no do-overs.
Of course I’m not sure what we could have done different anyway. We can’t change the passage of time. It just seems so astounding that we got here and it really does seem like in the blink of an eye.
I’m not actually sure of the goal of this column. With most of my writings I hope to change something politically, socially or economically. With this one I suppose I am assuming the role of my parents and grandparents; and yours. You’ll reach a point somewhere in your middle age years where this will hit you square in the face.
You feel helpless and can only travel back in your mind and photo albums to relive what flew by the first time around.
I guess I’m saying that while we all try to balance all we can in our lives, don’t do it at the expense of time that you can’t replace. Make memories, not just money and trust that while time sometimes seems like it’s dragging along in your younger years; trust me it’s not.
Zak has been a blessing, a challenge, a young man we’ve been proud of and one who has frustrated us as he’s let opportunities slip through his grasp. But most of all he is a fine young man with a creative mind, good friends and a passion for life. And he got there in the blink of an eye! Happy Birthday Zak! We love you!
