XENIA — Both local and visiting cyclists are invited to join the 2014 Greene Trails Cycling Classic this July. The event is put on by Greene County Parks and Trails for either one, two, three or four days and will feature the region’s 62 miles of paved, multi-use trails.
The classic will be held July 17-20 and will be based at the county fairgrounds in Xenia. Each day of the classic a different trail will be featured. Cyclists can choose participate from one to four days..
“Greene County Parks and Trails is thrilled to again host the Greene Trails Cycling Classic that raises vital funds to maintain the county’s paved, multi-use trails,” said Greene County Parks and Trails Director Chrisbell Bednar. “Our paved trails are renowned throughout the nation for their quality, safety and scenic locations. Cyclists come to Greene County from across the United States just to experience our five-trail system with four trails converging at Xenia Station. Our paved trails translate into dollars and cents for the local economy by bringing in visitors to our communities.”
The cycling event was founded in 2003 by the late Barbara Zajbel, then-director of the Xenia Area Chamber of Commerce. Greene County Parks and Trails began managing the growing event as a fundraiser to maintain the paved, multi-use trail system.
Included events throughout the four-day classic are the “Slow Pokiest Cycling Race,” the “Sit and Drag Race,” a concert, a pancake breakfast and several planned rides throughout Greene County.
All rides will begin and end at the Fairgrounds Recreation Center in Xenia and will include rest stops supplied with snacks and beverages. Routes include on-trail, out-and-back trips, as well as extended rides on rural routes on designated days.
