PIQUA — For the second consecutive day, a motorist has lost his life on a Miami County roadway.

A crash involving a motorcycle and a pickup truck at the intersection of State Rtoute 66 and West Miami-Shelby Road resulted in the death of Joseph S. Stanley, 24, 0f Piqua.

Miami County Coroner Dr. Steve Huffman said that Stanley was driving his motorcycle north on State Route 66 around 5 a.m. when an eastbound pickup truck, operated by James E. Westfall, 58, of Bradford, stopped at the stop sign on Miami-Shelby Road, then proceeded into the intersection, striking the motorcycle.

The pickup truck driver was reportedly uninjured but was transported to the hospital by medic, complaining of chest pains. Preliminary reports indicate that Stanley was not wearing a helmet at the time of the crash. Westfall was wearing a seatbelt. Speed does not appear to have been a factor in the crash.

The crash remains under investigation by the Miami County Sheriff’s Office.

State Route 66 was closed for approximately two hours.
