Devotional: Meet Jesus

“Andrew, Simon Peter’s brother, was one of the two who heard what John had said and who had followed Jesus. The first thing Andrew did was to find his brother Simon and tell him, ‘We have found the Messiah’ (that is, the Christ). And he brought him to Jesus.” (John 1:40-42a)

There is nothing more wonderful than this account of Andrew inviting his brother, Peter, to meet Jesus. This is the first thing he did after coming to Jesus himself. This is what it takes, and this is all it takes, to bring one to become a follower of Jesus. To meet Jesus is to be changed forever. His presence does the changing. His presence is irresistible.

Do we have the same excitement about inviting others to meet Jesus? Are we like Andrew, wanting others to know Jesus? Many times our hesitation to invite someone to worship or Bible study is our fear that we are going to have to do something extraordinary to bring them to faith in Jesus.

It doesn’t work that way. Jesus does the extraordinary if we just let Him get his foot in the door of a person’s life. Maybe it is that person’s presence in worship, a study or receiving a Bible or tract. If we can just be of help so that Jesus can get His foot in the door, He will take it from there.

Heavenly Father, give us a heart for the lost. Give us enthusiasm to introduce others to Your Son, Jesus. Give us wisdom on how to help Jesus get His foot in the door of their lives. In His name. Amen.
