GREENE COUNTY — Members of the Greene County law enforcement community participated in the 2016 Law Enforcement Torch Run for Special Olympics Ohio Thursday. This year’s event is the 30th anniversary of the fundraiser and awareness tool for Special Olympics.

“It’s an awesome event,” said leg coordinator Josef Ture, just before local officers headed out from Xenia on the run route to Yellow Springs. “The Law Enforcement Torch run itself is the biggest promotional vehicle and fundraising vehicle for Special Olympics, not only in the state, but nationally and globally.”

According to Ture, this year’s run includes more than 2,200 officers participating in six different relays from around the state. The various legs will converge Friday in Columbus, where a torch will be handed off to a Special Olympics athlete, who will light the cauldron during the Opening Ceremonies of the 2016 Special Olympics Ohio State Summer Games.

Ture said the run raised about $563,000 for Special Olympics Ohio last year.
