FAIRBORN — The City of Fairborn Engineering Division has just upgraded the audible crossing signal on Col. Glenn Highway at University Boulevard, at the entrance of Wright State University.

All sounds originate from the button, which also has a flashing red light, and a special locator tone helps visual impaired persons to find the button easily.

Engineering Technician II Doug Boney said the antiquated system at that crossing only provided chirps to indicate when it was safe to cross, but would simply stop when the light changed. With updated technology, however, when the button is depressed, the user will hear “Wait”, until the walk symbol comes on followed by, “Colonel Glenn walk sign is on to cross.” At this particular location, a countdown from 19 will begin to allow a person to cross.

During the installation, which took approximetly half a day to get both sides activated, Boney said a lot of foot traffic occurs at that intersection, and the upgraded signal will be useful.

Wright State University reported to the City of Fairborn that the old audible system signals were not working and this led Fairborn to review newer technology. This is the first of two signals to be replaced on Col Glenn Highway. The second will occur at the Col. Glenn/Center Drive/Center Park Blvd. intersection later this fall.
