BELLBROOK — Last week the seventh graders of Bellbrook Middle School were treated to a presentation by Melissa Jordan who spent part of two summers in the Peru rainforest.

Jordan came from Indiana to share her rainforest experiences with Cathy St. Pierre’s science classes for the past three years. Jennifer St. Pierre’s science classes were able to join the fun.

Bellbrook seventh grade science students not only learned about the rainforest, but many other valueable life lessons.

Fishing for red belly piranhas, learning about the whip spider and the walking trees were a few experiences Jordan shared with the students. She talked about how Peruvians used plants for medicines, pictures and stories of the local shaman, and poison dart guns which the students found fascinating. Students enjoyed learning the proper use of the dart gun and studied how it was constructed and its functions.

Students also learned how Peruvians traded for goods. They examined purses with animal vertebrae as decoration, bowls crafted from huge shells, and many other samples of goods that were traded.

Jordan’s pictures and stories help the students understand the plants, animals, layers of the rainforest, and lifestyle of those who live there. She also shared pictures of the dirty water from the Amazon river and showed how they tried different water filtration techniques to make the water safer to drink, cook, and bathe.

Cathy St. Pierre said, “It is important to provide authentic experiences and opportunities for learning beyond the traditional science classroom. Thanks to Mrs. Jordan’s presentations, the students learned new information and got a better idea of life in a tropical rainforest.”
