Physicians recognize Endometriosis Awareness Month

FAIRBORN — As part of National Endometriosis Awareness Month in March, doctors at Wright State Physicians Obstetrics and Gynecology are encouraging women to talk to their physicians about endometriosis — a condition that causes chronic pelvic pain, infertility and other problems.

“In endometriosis, tissue normally found inside the uterus is located outside of the uterus and develops into growths that cause pain before and during menstruation,” said Jerome Yaklic, M.D., an obstetrician-gynecologist with Wright State Physicians Obstetrics & Gynecology and chair and associate professor of the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at the Wright State University Boonshoft School of Medicine. “Women may experience painful periods, pain during or after sex, and infertility.”

An estimated 6.3 million women and girls in the United States are affected by endometriosis, according to the Endometriosis Association. About 40 percent of women experiencing infertility have endometriosis. Endometriosis can damage the sperm or egg and interfere with movement through the fallopian tubes and uterus, according to the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists.

Yaklic encourages women experiencing chronic or severe pelvic pain to contact their physician. “While there is no cure, we can effectively treat endometriosis through medication, hormone therapy or surgery,” Yaklic said. Wright State Physicians Obstetrics & Gynecology is enrolling patients with endometriosis in several clinical trials for new endometriosis treatments. For more information, call 937-208-6810.
