Wright-Patterson Air Force Base officials break ground for new Kittyhawk Pharmacy

WRIGHT-PATTERSON AIR FORCE BASE — Wright-Patterson Air Force Base broke ground June 8 on a new satellite pharmacy facility.

“This is a very important opportunity for us as an instillation at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base,” Colonel Bradley W. McDonald, WPAFB 88th Air Base Wing and Installation Commander said. “When I think about this opportunity, I think about something very simple: this is about enhancing the trusted care we provide to airmen and their families, as well as to our retirees — and they deserve that.”

The Kittyhawk Pharmacy, measuring to be more than 10,000 square-feet in size, costs a total of $6.6 million and doubles the size and footprint of the current facility. It will feature $3.4 million in equipment and furniture, including a robot that will fill prescriptions at a faster rate. Construction is slated to end in the fall months of 2018 with a planned opening within the spring months of 2019.

It will include a larger waiting area and covered drive-thru window, which officials said match today’s standards and will be made of lead silver.

“Lead-certified buildings are resource efficient, they use less water and energy and reduce greenhouse gas and emissions,” said Army Lt. Col. Robert J. Newbauer, deputy commander, Louisville District, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. “As an added bones: they save money, tax dollar money.”

WPAFB officials are aiming to better serve the 7,000 active duty military members stationed in the area in addition to the 100,000 retirees within 100 miles. Newbauer explained that WPAFB retirees are not necessarily required to use government pharmacies, but it saves the government money when they do so. With the new facility, WPAFB is aiming to provide quality service so they may see “repeat customers.”

“[WPAFB] is still the reigning best Air Force base to be stationed at in the United States and there’s a reason for that,” McDonald said. “It’s not just what we do in the instillation and the great airmen and their families, but it’s also the continued support we get from the community, whether local, regional, at the state level or at the national level. We are blessed and honored to have that continued support and that’s what makes things like this (groundbreaking) happen today.”
