XENIA — An outbreak of the swine flu in Clinton County will not affect operations at the Greene County Fair, set to start Sunday, July 30.

The hog barn at the fair in Wilmington was shut down by state officials July 13 and the Junior Fair Market Hog Show became a “terminal show,” meaning all hogs will be sent to slaughter. But there is little fear of it spreading right now, according to Greene County Fair officials.

“At this time, no,” said board member Mark Everman. “You’re (simply) more aware that it’s there.”

The Greene County Agricultural Society has a series of steps in place to make sure animals are healthy prior to allowing them to enter the barn.

“We do a vet check before the hogs are unloaded,” Everman said. “We’ll just make sure we’re doing a really, really good vet check. We’ll know before they ever get off the trailer. Greene’s vet check is different than what Clinton (county) does. That’s a protocol we’re proud of.”

Clinton County Fair officials took no chances once the swine flu was confirmed.

Only the exhibitors and their parents were allowed to see the remainder of the show and as an added precaution, there will be no movement allowed between the hog barn and the poultry barn, as the swine flu is transmittable to poultry.
