Smith new facilities director for GC hospitals

BEAVERCREEK & XENIA — Dave Smith moved to the area because of advanced education and that experience transformed his career, now serving as director of facilities for Soin Medical Center and Greene Memorial Hospital.

Born in Jamaica, the young track and field runner earned a scholarship to college in Idaho. Smith set records in running during college, but he wanted a successful career in manufacturing and electrical engineering.

After graduating he found himself working as a corporate facilities manager in the automotive industry. The Six Sigma Black Belt wanted to further his education and began the engineering management program at the University of Dayton where he earned his master’s degree.

The new manager worked in automotive facilities until he had an opportunity to work in building services at a nearby hospital several years ago. This would lead to a promotion and a change over from automotive to health care. When he learned about the position at Greene and Soin he was excited.

“I gained a lot of experience during my time with health care facilities,” he said. “I enjoy conception work, program development and following regulation and compliance.”

He was impressed with regulation work so much so he also earned his OSHAA Trainer Certification, which he feels is so important for facilities work within the hospitals.

Smith prides himself on structure and team building and has already done much within his department.

“I am striving to improve processes” he said. “I am continually looking at ways in which we implement construction and renovations in the best possible way for everyone involved.”

Smith has family in the states and enjoys spending time with them when he can. He jogs leisurely now, but remembers his days in track and field and what hard work it involved.

About his work so far, “I enjoy what I do. The hospitals and Kettering Health Network are awesome. It is a totally different atmosphere than ever before. Everyone cares about each other here, and that shows itself in our care for patients. I really enjoy working for a successful organization and I want to continue that work with what I do daily.”
