XARSC prepping for Thanksgiving meal

XENIA — More than 300 pounds of turkey will be, uh, gobbled up during Xenia’s annual free Thanksgiving day meal Nov. 23.

A collaborative between the Xenia Area Association of Churches & Ministries, the Xenia Adult Recreation and Services Center and the City of Xenia, the free event — which started nearly 20 years ago — will again be held at the XARSC between 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.

In addition to the basted birds, more than 200 pounds of spuds will be mashed for the nearly 600 people who will attend.

WGC Golf Course is donating the turkeys, which are cooked and prepared by Groceryland. Other items, including rolls, green beans and the mashed potatoes are donated by other businesses. The City of Xenia provides pies via donations from staff and residents. XAACM provides the rest, with help from donors including Greene Memorial Hospital. The XARSC allows the use of its facility free of charge. WGC is able to provide the turkeys through funds raised at its annual October golf outing, according to event organizer and Xenia Mayor-elect Sarah Mays.

“One of my favorite things about this event is seeing the people of Xenia come together to serve and love others,” Mays said. “People volunteer their time, their money, their food, and they do it each year. So many of the volunteers are ‘repeat’ volunteers. They look forward to it. And we love adding new volunteers each year. They always report back how much fun they had serving others. These are the moments where it’s easy to see why this is the City of Hospitality. Politics, denominations, differences of opinions, they all get set aside when we choose to look outside ourselves and just simply serve others and love them well.”

Volunteers are still needed and deliveries are available for those unable to leave their homes.

To request a delivery or to volunteer, contact Mays at 937-241-8873 or email [email protected]. Delivery requests should be made no later than 5 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 22. To donate a pie or funds for a pie, contact city administration at 937-376-7232.

The Xenia Adult Recreation and Services Center is at 130 E. Church St.
