WRIGHT-PATTERSON AIR FORCE BASE — After a deliberate review and assessment of the potential impacts to Area A if Well #8 were shut down, and as an abundance of caution, base officials have made the decision to shut down the well.

Doing so ensures compliance with Ohio Environmental Protection Agency directives.

The well was found to be non-compliant with the new US EPA standard of 70 parts per trillion, which was changed Thursday, May 19. Well #8 had previously tested at a level of 110 parts per trillion. Upon receipt of a letter from the Ohio EPA Friday, May 20, base officials immediately took action to provide an alternative source of water for the at-risk population, which included women who were pregnant or lactating and bottle-fed infants.

Testing of Well #8, as well as the remaining four wells in Area A, will be conducted on a monthly basis.

“The health and well-being of our people is our number one priority,” said Col. Elena Oberg, 88th Air Base Wing vice commander.

“We will continue to work closely with the Ohio EPA to develop a long-range plan to resolve this issue,” she added.
