XENIA — The 2014 Lamb Cook-off at the Greene County Fair was held Sunday afternoon. The event produced several unique dishes that pleased Cook-off Judge Sandy Feix of Xenia. She was looking for specific elements in her judging of the three divisions of entries.
“I was looking for originality, the appearance on the plate, the place that they had set up and then I was looking for flavor,” Feix said.
Charles Kimball of Clifton took home the blue ribbon in the celebrity division with his lamb and ricotta pie.
“Chuck’s I liked because it was something original,” Feix said. “It was different.”
“I’ve been cooking this cookoff off and on for 40 some years,” Kimball said. “We were one of the families that got together and started this here in Greene County.”
In the adult division, Kim Millhoan of Xenia won top honors with her lamb loaf. Millhoan said she has been at the Greene County Fair since she was nine years old.
“Kim’s lamb loaf, it was very moist, very tender,” Feix said. “She had a very good presentation.”
Feix was extremely complimentary of the those in the junior division of the competition. “The three youngest ones down here are going to give the older ones a run for their money,” she said. “Their dishes were excellent. I hope they keep doing it.”
Out of that division the blue ribbon went to Kolby Mueller of Xenia, who prepared lamb meatballs based on an old family recipe. Mueller beat out his cousin Wade Hutchison for the title in the youngest division.
“The lamb meatballs are absolutely delicious,” Feix said. “And that sauce, it’s not too bitter, it’s not too sweet. It was very good.”
Once the judging was completed, it didn’t take long for the gathered crowd to swarm through the line to try each of the assembled lamb dishes. There wasn’t much left over once they passed.
