Greene County News Report

XENIA — A daring vision, an unbelievable plan and a successful escape: The flight from a life as a Virginia slave to seek his family already in the North.

That was the motivation for Henry Brown to dare to slip undetected by hiding in a wooden box traveling to Philadelphia. From that time on, he was known as Henry “Box” Brown. Brown joined other abolitionists from Philadelphia to rally the public against the evils of slavery.

Fearing that his master’s slave catchers could find and return him to Virginia, he boarded a ship bound for England. His anti-slavery work continued there until he finally returned to the United States.

Brown will be one of the characters portrayed 2-4 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 20 at the Collins School, 2804 West Enon Road during a program about slavery and the 13th Amendment.

The event is free, with donations encouraged, and open to the public. Bringing lawn chairs will be helpful. Parking is available at the school and Greene County Career Center. In case of inclement weather, the event will be held at GCCC.
