XENIA — Students at Xenia Christian recently took part in a packing party to help feed hungry children in Haiti.

As part of the “Feed the Need” fund-raiser, Xenia Christian partnered with sister school Dayton Christian to pack 30,000 meals to send to one of the world’s poorest third-world countries.

The campaign allowed students to learn about children facing hunger and allowed them to make a difference by contributing to the solution.

“One of Dayton Christian School System’s core values is service,” said president Bob Elliott. “We exist to serve the Christian home and to inspire our students to love and serve others … Every year we send several small teams of students to difference countries like Jamaica, France and Costa Rica to share the Gospel and serve the needy. Feed the Need gives us the unique opportunity to raise money for our school and involve all of our students in a service project right here at home … “

The meals consisted of rice, soy protein, dehydrated vegetables and 19 vitamins and minerals in a chicken-flavored powder, designed by a General Mills dietitian for children with malnutrition.

Xenia Christian is the first school in Ohio to conduct this type of program in conjunction with Champion Events Group from Birmingham, AL., according to the school. It’s packing party was supposed to be in the school’s auditorium but had to be moved to the Schindler Banquet Center because a one-ton bag of rice would not fit through any door at the school.

“We are so thankful to Athletes in Action, who owns the Schindler Banquet Center, for being an answer to our prayers and for providing this wonderful venue for our Feed the Need packing,” said Cristy Kettering, event director.

Student families and staff are still seeking personal sponsorship to raise Feed the Need money for school projects and to help with the cost of the current project.
