YELLOW SPRINGS — Roughly 85 percent of the class of 2014 will continue their education after graduating from Yellow Springs High School.

The 52 seniors will participate in a commencement ceremony at 7 p.m. Thursday, May 29 at the high school located at 420 E. Enon Road. A total of 44 students will be attending college, while eight will enter the military or workforce. The class was awarded nearly $24,000 in local scholarships, not including monies offered by their respective colleges.

“The Yellow Springs High School Class of 2014 is a great group of kids including many creative and artistic folks,” said YSHS counselor David Smith.

This year’s valedictorian is Rachel Meyer, daughter of Cheryl Meyer and Debra Zendlovitz and sister to Sara Zendlovitz.

“Art has long been a passion of mine, and while I am open to all mediums, I usually find myself working in mixed media collage, often with found paper,” she said.

Meyer has been swimming for years and loves coaching and volunteering for the sport, as well as participating. In the fall, she plans to attend Macalester College, a liberal arts school in St. Paul, Minn., where she will major in Studio Art. She has chosen to attend a liberal arts school because she wants the opportunity to explore many subjects in order to become a more knowledgeable citizen and find her true passions.

Salutatorian Zoey McKinley will be attending The Ohio State University in the fall to study Biomedical Engineering. She and her 15-year-old horse, Noah, have participated in the Stillwater Pony Club (the local chapter of the US Pony Clubs) for the past five years and recently passed the C-2 level. She plans to continue horse-back riding in college.

“Thanks to the Riding Centre ladies for being my second family and my barn moms,” said McKinley. “Thanks to all my teachers who nurtured and encouraged me during the past 13 years. Most of all, thanks to my parents Rachel and Doug who always supported me.”

The remaining members of the class of 2014 are Brianna Ayers, Vivian Barbian, Ariana Bateman, Morgan Beard, Taylor Beck, Christina Brewer, Hannah Brown, Carter Collins, TT Colquitt, Camara Cross, Cayden Defusco, Kirsten Denman, Juan Erazo, Joey Flores, Ben Green, Naomi Guth, Deborah Hall, Aaron Harshaw, Kennedy Harshaw, Cameron Henderson, Shane Herbst, Sam Holman-Smith, Reed Huston, Zachary Kimmet, Maeve Korkan-Laughlin, Eizo Lang-Ezekiel, Eric Lawhorn, Sierra Lawrence, Tony Lewis, Jessic Livezey, Jimmy Miller, Nick Miller-Jacobson, Max Mullin, Nkosi Ngqakayi, Rachele Orme, Tia Peckham, Anndee Pettiford, Olivia Ramage, Grant Reigelsperger, Eric Reimers, Mychael Roberts, Sam Salazar, Sharde Scott, Jacob Smith, Julia Tarpey, Lindsey Ward, Evie Weir, Ivy Welsh, Hue White and Noah Winold.
