XENIA — Toward Independence Inc., hosted its 12th Annual Walk for Independence at Shawnee Park on May 17.
As the non-profit agency’s primary fund-raising and public awareness event, proceeds benefit men, women, and children with developmental disabilities such as autism, Down Syndrome, and Cerebral Palsy. The estimated $18,000 raised will be used to purchase clothing, furniture, shoes, medical and dental items, safety and mobility equipment and accessible vehicles for transportation.
Approximately 300 people turned out in support of the fundraiser, despite very cold and windy weather conditions. Participants enjoyed a fun morning that included breakfast, a Zumba walker warm-up, juggling, caricatures, cash prizes, giveaways, and of course, the opportunity to make a positive difference in the lives of people with developmental disabilities!
“It was a great event,” said TI Executive Director Mark Schlater. “I am pleased with the donations received, which will directly impact the quality of life of the individuals in our care. The event also provided a valuable opportunity to interact with the community and educate the public on the needs and abilities of people with developmental disabilities. On behalf of TI, I would like to thank our donors, sponsors, and the event participants, whose steadfast commitment to our cause enabled this success”
