XENIA — Have a child who is finishing third, fourth or fifth grades?

Collins School, a one-room Xenia Township school which served families in the neighborhood until 1945, will hold its first camp for both boys and girls to learn and play the old fashioned way. Thousands of children from the Miami Valley have attended Collins on West Enon Road near Greene County Career Center for a day’s field trip, but in recent years, many districts have cut back or cut out field trips for students, so the opportunity for having a day of “living history” has not been provided. The school has been providing a “living history” experience for 29 years.

The camp will be held for three mornings and eligible students may register for one or both weeks: Tuesday through Thursday 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. the weeks of June 17-19 and/or June 24-26. Collins teachers Gayle Hartman and Robin Vaughn will be leading children in short lessons, music, games, crafts, snacks and exploration of the herb garden. At the conclusion of each Thursday at 12 p.m., parents are welcome to look around the school, the outbuildings and take pictures. Children are welcome to dress in old-fashioned clothing, but it is not required.

Registration forms are currently available at the Greene County Public Libraries’ bulletin boards, Wicklines Garden Center and Xenia YMCA. Registrations are $30 per week and a confirmation postcard will be sent with more information for registrants.
