XENIA — The dairy barn at the Greene County Fair was bustling with activity Tuesday morning as the 2014 Junior 4-H and FFA Dairy Show had kids from across the county showing off their work.

Judge Ray Jackson of De Graff was looking for structural soundness in the dairy cattle being shown. “The idea is that they make a lot of milk for a long time,” he said. He was also looking for “dairy character.”

“It gives them the appearance that they make milk instead of making fat,” he said. “Long, clean neck. Thinner hide. To a beef farmer they probably look skinny when they’re really making a lot of milk and doing well. Even the younger ones that aren’t milking yet, they need to show those characteristics.”

Greg Tucker of Xenia took home the Senior Dairy Showmanship award for his work with his Jersey fall Heifer calf.

“It took a lot of time and patience to do it,” he said. “I walk her two times a day about an hour in the morning, an hour in the evening. It paid off.”

Tyler Dovayak, also of Xenia, took home the Junior Dairy Showmanship award for his work with his Jersey summer yearling.

“I’ve been working really hard: walking her, feeding her every day and just putting in all the effort to get her as good as I can,” he said of his yearling, Beulah. “It means a lot.”

Dovayak also took home the overall Junior Champion title for his work.

Ava Dicke of Xenia won the Senior Champion title for her two-year-old Holstein cow.

“It’s a lot of work,” she said. “I’ve done it for 13 years now, so it’s kind of second nature to me. Every day you have to be out there, and you have to really work for it. It’s a really big honor.”
