CEDARVILLE TOWNSHIP — Quiz time.

What has nearly 300 pounds of fruit, 150 pounds of flour, 36 pounds of Crisco and 25 pounds of lard?

The pies being served at Sunday’s ice cream social at the home of Attorney General Mike DeWine, of course.

Back after a one-year hiatus due to a family wedding, DeWine and his wife, Fran, will once again open their historic farmhouse from 1 to 5 p.m. for pies, ice cream, music and fun. Nearly 2,000 are expected to attend.

“We’re back at it,” Fran DeWine said last Friday while making the pies with the help from about a dozen friends. “I think that they (missed it).”

Using the aforementioned ingredients, Fran DeWine and her crew peeled, cut, mixed and rolled over and over again to make cherry, peach, apple and blueberry pies, among other flavors.

“When my freezer’s full, I quit,” she said. Fran DeWine will wake up at 4 a.m. on Saturday and bake the pies, nine at a time, until they are all ready.

Popular bluegrass group Joe Mullins and the Radio Ramblers will headline the music along with the Cedarville Firehouse friends and a barbershop quartet. There will be games for kids and a pie eating contest.

“It’s a grass roots thing to get people to come,” Fran DeWine said. “It’s a family event.”

The ice cream social started in 1976 when Mike DeWine ran for Greene County Prosecutor. The event was used a fund-raiser. In addition to homemade pies, the DeWines served homemade ice cream. Starting in 1979 the ice cream social was an annual event until 2006 when Mike DeWine left the United States Senate. It was held in 2007 for DeWine’s volunteers and then after a year off, resumed until last year, when the DeWine’s son, Mark, got married the same weekend the social was normally held.

“I thought I couldn’t do both,” Fran DeWine said.

The cost is $5 for adults while kids are free. The home is at 2587 Conley Road.
