FAIRBORN — A Fairborn man faces child endangering charges after police found him intoxicated and under the influence of drugs with his 3-year-old daughter in his care early Tuesday.
Police responded to an apartment in the 2100 block of Rockdell Drive on a request for a welfare check around 12:30 a.m. Aug. 26. The 3-year-old child’s mother reported that the resident, Joshua Thornton, 23, was not answering phone calls or knocks on the door.
“The girlfriend called because she didn’t take her keys with her when she left and she was trying to get into the apartment,” said Fairborn Sgt. Mark Stannard. “She said he is normally a light sleeper and his car was parked outside so she knew he was there. Officers forced entry and found Thornton unresponsive.”
Fairborn medics were called to the scene and were able to wake Thornton, who admitted to being intoxicated and under the influence of marijuana, police said. The child was also located unharmed inside the apartment.
“The child was asleep but if the she had been in distress the father was so out of it he would never have known,” Stannard said.
The mother now has custody of the child.
Thornton was arrested on misdemeanor charges of child endangering, possession of drugs, and possession of marijuana paraphernalia.
