“But blessed is the man who trusts in the Lord, whose confidence is in him. He will be like a tree planted by the water that sends out its roots by the stream. It does not fear when heat comes; its leaves are always green. It has no worries in a year of drought and never fails to bear fruit.” (Jeremiah 17:7-8)
This is a wonderful encouragement amidst Jeremiah’s woes. He has been wrestling with God on issues of Israel’s sin. He is tormented by the lack of faith of his people and the coming discipline of God. At times he even asks for the Lord to punish His people because they fail to listen to his prophecies. And yet he does not shrink from believing in the Lord and trusting Him. He is a perfect example of a person pulled this way and that and yet remaining faithful to the one he knows is in control. Jeremiah does not fear the heat put upon him by the people. He is roots so deeply in God that he has not a worry and continues to bear the fruit the Lord has given him to share.
What a blessing to be so rooted in God that we live for Him no matter what. This is our desire, to be rooted in Him, and producing for Him. When we know His presence the fear within us fades and whatever heat is put on us by the world has no effect. We have known that heat and are now free of it in many ways – free to live and work for Him. We want our roots to good deep into the presence of our God.
Heavenly Father, by Your Grace draw our roots deep into You. Infuse us with what we need to be faithful to You. Enable us to withstand any heat put upon us by those of the world. We trust You always, in every situation and circumstance. Thank You for Your blessing. Bless us still. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
