XENIA —Sydnee Hawkins showed her grand champion Hereford gilt at the National Hereford Hog Association show and sale in Illinois over the weekend.

The eight-year-old Greene County girl had the top hog at the 2014 Ohio State Fair. Her four-year-old brother, Casen, also helped show their hogs at the various summer fairs. The pigs are judged on breed characteristics, structural soundness and muscle tone.

The kids put in a plethora of hours over the summer to get their gilts into top form for the shows.

“(We) are very proud of the work the kids put into working with the pigs every day,” father Willie Hawkins said.

The siblings were excited about the opportunity to show and sell the pig at the Belvidere, Ill., show but Sydnee was particularly excited because “it will go home and have baby pigs … to show next year.”
