XENIA — Residents in Greene County will see staff and volunteers from Greene Memorial Hospital and Soin Medical Center all over the county throughout the season.
As part of their continual commitment to the community, the two hospitals will sponsor and participate in various festivals and events throughout the county, with the first big one being the Greene County Fair beginning Sunday.
The hospitals will have a booth and a first aid station for the entire fair week July 27 to Aug. 2.
“Being a part of the Fair is part of our committment saying, ‘We are here and we are here for you. We are not only here for your healthcare needs, but we are here for you in other ways,’” said GMH & Soin Community Relations Coordinator Donna Saraga.
The basic first aid station will be staffed by ER nurses, mostly from GMH, but some also from Soin during fair hours.
In its second year, the goal is to provide basic first aid needs.
She added, “The fair loves that we’re out there when kids are out there.”
ER nurses also work throughout the season to compliment the EMS staff at events while attending other events throughout the county.
The hospital’s booth is acutally a bus and is wheelchair accessible. Staff will be at the booth from 4-9 p.m. daily during the Fair. The bus will be used throughout the festivals and parades. The bus is shared with Greene Oaks rehab and nursing facility and used for the patients.
There will be free ice water, apples and give away items at the booth and most importantly Saraga said hospital information. The booth will be staffed all week by hospital employees so they may talk with the public about the different services available.
Several years ago GMH wanted to provide outreach and support to with the county they serve. After a community coordinator was hired they have been able to do much more.
“Being at the fair says we are here to support the Greene County Fair Board and the 4-H kids for all the hard work they have done,” Saraga added.
During the Air Force Marathon they will provide a Volunteer Suite where the large number of volunteers can take a break from the large community event. This was something staff began last year and will return this year.
“We wanted to be able to say thank you to all the volunteers it takes to put this event on,” said Saraga.
During the Fairborn Sweetcorn Festival hospital staff plans to have someone available to help women schedule mammograms and talk about the importance with festival-goers along with being a sponsor of the festival.
They also plan to sponsor the entertainment at the Old Timers Days.
Last year the hospitals massed approximately 200 volunteers and hope to have just as many this year.
“We believe its our job to be out in the community. This makes us available to answer questions, provide information about our services,” said Saraga.
Just some of the upcoming events from now through October include: Greene County Doggie Dash and Splash, CedarFest, Clifton Arts & Music Festival, Beavercreek Popcorn Festival, Xenia Community Festival, Jamestown Bean Festival, Spring Valley Potato Festival, Enon Apple Butter Festival and Yellow Springs Street Fair.
