XENIA — Xenia’s curbside recycling program is getting a boost with a new incentive aimed to increase participation and keep more material out of landfills.

Residents who are recycling or would like to start should take the online pledge (also available on the City’s website). Taking the pledge enters the resident into a quarterly drawing for $100 gift card to Willie’s Sports Bar and Grille and recognition at City Council and in the Xenia Communicator newsletter. The program is sponsored by Rumpke.

City residents recycled about 1.6 million pounds in 2013, but not every household puts out a bin for the Rumpke Recycling truck each week.

“There is a great opportunity for us to improve our recycling rate, conserve more landfill space and save valuable natural resources,” said City Manager Brent Merriman. “We hope residents will show they care about the environment, and pledge to recycle.”

The incentive program is only open to city residents, and participation in the recycling program will be verified. There is no extra cost for city residents to use weekly recycling service, which includes an 18-gallon bin. These items are accepted for recycling:

• Plastic bottles and jugs

• Aluminum and metal cans

• Paper and cardboard

• Glass bottles and jars

• Cartons (e.g. milk and juice cartons)

Xenia has been recycling with Rumpke since 2004. Recyclables are processed at Rumpke Recycling in Dayton.
