XENIA — Xenia Community Schools is bringing renowned author Mike Thaler to the five elementary buildings during the week of Sept. 29.
An award-winning author and illustrator, Thaler’s belief is that story writing and riddles are the tools needed to stimulate children’s awareness of language and its creative use. Thaler, who has written more than 250 books for children including “Black Lagoon,” travels the world sharing his message with teachers and children
Thaler has created word play games, software, and audio cassettes and created and wrote “Letterman” for TV’s Electric Co. He also launched the Jell-O Reading Rocket Program, designed to motivate children to read.
Xenia Community Schools and the Xenia Community Schools Foundation have joined together in an effort to raise funds to purchase a “Black Lagoon” book for each elementary child in the Xenia Community Schools.
The goal is to raise $6,225 by Sept. 20. The District will use these funds to buy grade level appropriate books for all 2037 elementary students. The Xenia Community Schools Foundation is coordinating the fund-raising effort. Donations can be made through the XCSF website: http://xscfoundation.com or to the Xenia Area Chamber of Commerce, 334 W. Market Street, Xenia, OH 45385. All gifts designated for this initiative will be acknowledged as charitable contributions.
The public is invited to attend a session with Thaler 6-7:30 p.m. on Sept. 30 at Tecumseh Elementary School.
