As our nation mourns the anniversary of the tragedy at Sandy Hook Elementary, it is natural to ask, “Why?” and “How can we prevent reoccurrence?”

We can debate the “Why?” from now to eternity and not know the answer, because it involves motive. Only God and the person who committed the act know the real motive.

How can we prevent reoccurrence? We can’t. The mentally ill perpetrator could have used any of many options for mass indiscriminate killing. In this instance he chose firearms.

Rapid fire, large capacity firearms have been available since the early 1900s; but large scale, indiscriminate killings with guns were rare (one in the 1930s) before the late 1960s/early 1970s. The young adults responsible for the later crimes missed the influence of McGuffey Readers, which taught lessons in morals, as well as reading. Later generations were also denied any mention of God in classrooms. Today, less than half of us attend church. Some churches seldom mention God, or teach the folly of sinful behavior.

We can no longer wait 30 to 60 years for experience to teach individuals the value of good moral behavior, and that God does exist. We are witnessing the result of excluding Him from classrooms, and much of our daily lives. It will not get better unless we rectify the situation.

Congress can start the process by limiting the appellate jurisdiction of the Supreme Court as specified in Article 3, Section 2 of the Constitution. The question of allowing God in classrooms would then revert to the individual States. Residents who object to their state’s choice would be free to move to states that chose otherwise. It might take another 50 years (the ban on God in schools started in1962), but by allowing States to choose, we would determine if one choice was better than the other. Our current “one size fits all” choice of denial certainly is not working.
