BASKETBALL

Horizon League announces new tourney format

INDIANAPOLIS — The Horizon League Executive Council has approved a revised bracket for the 2017 Little Caesars Horizon League Men’s and Women’s Basketball Championships. In the new format, the women’s basketball championship will run concurrently with the men’s as “Motor City Madness” runs March 3-7, at Joe Louis Arena in Detroit.

The five days of games will feature men’s and women’s tournament contests on each day, beginning with the 8-9 and 7-10 games on Friday, March 3. The winners of those contests will play the Nos. 1 and 2 seeds in the second round, with the victors advancing to Monday’s semifinals. Sunday’s third round contests will see the 4-5 and 3-6 seeds play for a berth in the semifinals. Semifinal winners will meet on Tuesday, March 7, for the Horizon League title and automatic bid into the NCAA Men’s and Women’s Tournaments.

All-session and single-session tickets will go on sale on Thursday, Dec. 29, at MotorCityMadness.HorizonLeague.com, the Joe Louis Arena Box Office and Ticketmaster.com.

Dynamo close out season this weekend

DAYTON — The Dayton Dynamo will play their final National Premier Soccer League match of the season on Friday, and has a non-league match on Sunday.

Friday’s July 8 match against the Michigan Stars will be the team’s final match in NPSL action. The game is set for a 7 p.m. start at Welcome Stadium in Dayton.

Sunday’s match is the Dynamo’s final match of the season. They’ll host the Chicago Mustangs for a 2 p.m. battle on Wright State University’s Alumni Field. In addition to available general admission seats, $5 lawn seats are also available.

SW Ohio Track Club program under way

YELLOW SPRINGS — The Southwest Ohio Track Club’s Summer Track and Field Program has begun. This program is open to youth 7 years older and older including Masters. Practices are on 5 p.m. and 6 p.m. Monday, Tuesday and Thursday at Yellow Springs High School through July 21. The summer program is a certified USATF program with excellent coaching and training. Beavercreek hosting Elite Running/Fitness Camp

BEAVERCREEK — An Elite Running/Fitness Camp, sponsored by the Beavercreek High School Cross Country team, will take place from 6:30-8 p.m. July 18-21 at Ferguson Hall on the Beavercreek High School campus, look for large tents and flags.

A Future Olympian Race of Champions will be held at 6:30 p.m. on the last day of the session. Cost is $25. Make checks out to: BCCPA. Runners will learn about proper running form, how to train for distance running, strength/core training using body weight exercises, and fun running games. HOCKEY

H.S. development program offered

Academy Hockey is a new and exciting opportunity for area high school players to improve skills and continue enjoying the game of hockey off-season. Academy Hockey Program goals are open opportunity (no tryouts), skills development (max touches/reps), and fun! This program is available to all area high school players and is endorsed by your Dayton area High School coaches (Alter, Beavercreek, Centerville, Springboro, and Troy). The program meets all OHSAA pre/post criteria — and former Division I Hockey players form the core of our coaching staff!

Summer camp will run from 7-8:20 p.m., July 18-21 at South Metro. Cost is $120. The 90-minute evening sessions include skills warm-ups and open non-checking fun play scrimmages.

A preseason fall camp will run on Thursdays (or Wednesday) and Sundays on Sept. 8 – Oct. 30 with one session of skills development and one session of scrimmage games, at a time and location to be announced. Cost is $400.

Camps are open to all area high school hockey players. Must have a current USA Hockey registration (last year’s is good through Aug. 31, 2016), and you need a liability waiver.

BICYCLING

Greene Trails Cycling Classic July 14-17

XENIA — The 2016 Greene Trails Cycling Classic will take place July 14-17 with the Greene County Fairgrounds Recreation Center serving as home base for the hundreds of cyclists expected to attend from all over the region.

Excursions will be planned for each day of the event. Registration includes Fairgrounds Recreation Center campsite, Support and Gear (SAG), fully-supported rest stops, purchase pick-up, breakfast daily and all evening entertainment including meal on Thursday and Saturday night – if registered for Thursday and Saturday.

Reduced Greene County Resident Rate includes all SAG, Rest Stops, Purchase Pick Up, Century Ride Award, Tent Camping and Breakfast. Additional and optional costs may include $10 per evening for entertainment; T-shirt, $15; and GTCC Jersey, $65.
