The Wright State men’s soccer team scored twice in the first half and made that stand up for a 3-1 victory at Portland (Ore.) in the season opener for both teams Friday, Aug. 26 as part of the Hensor/Zaher Classic.
Alec Phillipe, Sam DeRoy and Peguy Ngatcha had goals for Wright State. Ngatcha also had one assist while Eric Lynch of Bellbrook had two assists. Portland outshot the Raiders 5-4.
“Great team win for us tonight,” Coach Bryan Davis said. “If you just read stat line, the story is misleading. We controlled the majority of the game and felt really good about a lot of pieces of it. Naturally, when you go up a few goals, your opponent is going to press and put numbers forward which leads to more disruption and opportunities by our opponents. Credit our guys for staying together, weathering the storm, and eventually, as we preached, our third goal put the game away. That’s a very good Portland team we played, and coupled with the environment we were in, it was encouraging to see the performance we put forth.”
The Raiders lost, 3-1, to Oregon State on Sunday, Aug. 28 in Corvallis, in the final game of the classic. Wright State trailed 1-0 for most of the match before the Beavers scored three goals in the final 23 minutes.
OSU held the Raiders to two shots on goal.
Wright State (1-1) travels to Cincinnati, 7 p.m. Friday, Sept. 2 before hosting Duquesne in the home opener 7 p.m. Monday, Sept. 5 at Alumni Field.
