AUGUSTA, Ga. — The Central State Marauders men’s and women’s basketball teams each claimed Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference road wins over Paine College.
The women’s basketball team earned its first conference victory of the season with a 83-66 road win over Paine College.
Playing in their fifth straight road game, the Marauders scored a season-high 83 points thanks to a balanced scoring attack. All nine CSU players who saw action on the floor scored. Sophomore Tamara Sellers had an efficient night from the field, converting 7 of 11 field goal attempts to lead her team with 17 points. Senior Rahni Bell scored 15 points. Destinee Russell spent the night shutting down Paine’s best perimeter players while chipping in offensively with 10 points.
As a team, the Lady Marauders shot 53 percent from the field compared to a 40 percent performance from Paine.
Paine’s Janisha Wilkerson led all scorers with 18 points and 13 rebounds. Aalyiha Wright was the only other Lion to score in double figures with 10 points. The loss dropped Paine’s record to 4-3 overall with a 1-1 mark in the SIAC.
With Saturday’s win, Central State snapped a three-game losing streak while improving to 3-4 overall and 1-2 in the SIAC.
Central State will return to action at next week’s Joe Manchin Classic in Salem, W.Va. The Lady Marauders play Virginia State University on Friday and Bluefield State College on Saturday.
Central State men earn crucial SIAC win
AUGUSTA, Ga. — Playing the final game of a three-game southern road trip, the Central State Marauders earned an important SIAC victory with a 71-61 win Saturday over Paine College.
Eleven players scored for the Marauders. Keilan Blanks led the CSU starters with 10 points. Jermaine Crowder came off the bench to finish with 10 points and six rebounds. Markese McGuire chipped in with nine points.
The Marauders committed nine turnovers compared to Paine’s 15. CSU also held on a 50-41 edge in rebounding.
Paine College was led by Kaderius Compton’s 19 points and 13 rebounds. Jared Tate finished with 16 points.
CSU overcame a 37-percent shooting night from the field to bolster its record to 5-3 overall with a 2-1 mark in SIAC play.
“Anytime you take care of the ball, your team has a good chance to win,” CSU head coach Joseph Price said. “I thought we made smart decisions tonight and were able to came away with a crucial conference win on the road.”
The Marauders will have seven days before they travel to Washington, D.C. to play Washington Adventist University on Tuesday, Dec. 13. The game is scheduled for a 7:30 p.m. tip.
