Carroll girls climb to 5-0

BELLBROOK — Trailing 33-31 after three quarters of play, the visiting Carroll Patriots girls basketball team outscored Bellbrook 17-7 in the fourth quarter to claim a 48-40 win, Wednesday at Bellbrook High. With the win, Carroll remains undefeated this season at 5-0.

Morgan King led the Patriots with 212 points scored, while Amanda Schroeder turned in a double-double performance with 17 points scored and 11 rebounds. No individual stats were available for Bellbrook (2-2).

The Golden Eagles play next at 1:15 p.m. Saturday in Franklin. Carroll hosts St. Bernard Roger Bacon for a 1 p.m. game that same day.

Stebbins defeats Xenia

XENIA — Astella Welsh scored a team-high 14 points while Xenia Buccaneer teammates Trinity Morton-Nooks and Jada Wallace scored 13 each, but visiting Riverside Stebbins came away from Wednesday’s contest with a 62-48 win at XHS. No individual stats were available for Stebbins. Xenia (0-5, 0-1 in the Greater Western Ohio Conference’s American South Division) plays at Lebanon at 3 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 10.

Beavers sink Springfield

SPRINGFIELD — Keaira Youngblood scored a game-high 24 points and hauled in a game-high 10 rebounds in Beavercreek’s 76-39 girls basketball win Wednesday over host Springfield. Bailey Draughn also had a good scoring night. She finished with 14 for Beavercreek (4-1, 1-0 GWOC National East). The Battlin’ Beavers will host Huber Heights Wayne at 1 p.m. Saturday.

Springfield (0-2, 0-1 GWOC National East) was led by Ariana Rinehart, who finished with 13 points.

Rams win over Fairborn

FAIRBORN — The host Skyhawks outscored Trotwood-Madison 13-8 in the final quarter, but couldn’t overcome a 40-28 deficit, in Wednesday’s 48-41 girls basketball loss at Fairborn’s Baker Middle School.

Taj Thompson led Trotwood-Madison (4-0, 1-0 GWOC American South) with 17 points and Rams teammate Kellah Flucas finished with 10 in the win.

Fairborn (0-4, 0-1 GWOC American South) returns to action Saturday when they’ll play a 1 p.m. GWOC American South game at Riverside Stebbins.

Yellow Springs swimmer signs with MSU

YELLOW SPRINGS — Olivia Chick of Yellow Springs, has given a verbal commitment to Michigan State University for 2017-18. Chick is a senior at Yellow Springs High School, for whom she was the third-place finisher in the 100-yard freestyle (51.57) and the fifth-place finisher in the 200 freestyle (1:51.31) at the 2016 Ohio State High School Division II Championships. Chick is a two-time USA Swimming Scholastic All-American and a two-time Metro Buckeye Conference Swimmer of the Meet honoree.

Chick swims year-round with the Dayton Raiders. A long-axis stroke specialist, she has Winter Juniors cuts in the 100 free and she competed in the 50/100/200 freestyles and 50/100/200 backstrokes, as well as the 50 butterfly at the 2016 NCSA Spring Swimming Championships.

Driver turns self in for Benedict player’s death

COLUMBIA, S.C. — The hit-and-run driver who killed one Benedict College men’s basketball player and injured another has turned herself in. According to local television station WLTX, South Carolina Highway Patrol officials say Yalonda Lewis, 31, turned herself in Tuesday.

Benedict College student-athlete Rashee Hodges, from Smoaks, S.C. died Sunday morning after he and teammate Farouk Brimah were hit by a car while walking on Bluff Road. Brimah has since been treated and released from a local hospital.

Hodges had scored eight points in a 69-56 home win over Central State University, on Dec. 1.

Xenia Athletic Hall of Fame ceremonies set

XENIA — The 2016 class of inductees to the Xenia Hall of Fame will be introduced at the Jan. 13, 2017 Xenia High School boys varsity basketball game. This is the sixth class to be inducted into the Hall of Fame.

The 2016 Hall of Fame class — consisting of William “Bill” Wilson (track, and cross country coach 1954-‘79), Dr. David Hazel (football, track, class of 1970), Erin Hawley (swimming, 2008), Kristi Cope Elsman (soccer, basketball, 1993), Nick Ungard (golf, basketball, 1952), Richard Bennett (educator, coach, civic leader, 2016); Shawn Thigpen (basketball, track, 1993), Steve Smith (wrestling, 1988) and the 1985-‘86 XHS wrestling team — will attend the induction ceremony, which is set for 5:30 p.m., Saturday, Jan. 14, 2017 at Faith Community United Methodist Church, 100 Country Club Drive.
