INDIANAPOLIS — Wright State junior guard Chelsea Welch has been selected as the Horizon League Women’s Basketball Player of the Week for the week ending Jan. 29, it was announced Monday (Jan. 30) by the league office.

Welch (Kettering Fairmont) led the Raiders to a pair of home wins last week as WSU extended its winning streak to eight and improved to 9-1 in the league. In the two games, she totaled 57 points, 14 rebounds and six assists while shooting 56 percent from the field and 86 percent at the foul line.

In a 77-69 victory over Detroit Mercy on Jan. 27, she scored the most points by any player in a Horizon League game so far this season as she tallied a career-high 33 points on 11 of 18 shooting from the field and 11 of 12 at the foul line. Welch also added six rebounds and two assists.

Wright State then posted an 84-66 win over Oakland on Jan. 29 and Welch again led the way for the Raiders with 24 points on eight of 16 shooting from the field and eight of 10 at the free-throw line. She also had eight rebounds, four assists and two blocks.

On the season, Welch is fourth in the league in scoring at 18.0 points per game and in free throw percentage at .818, tied for fifth in steals per game at 1.9, 10th in assists per game at 3.3 and 14th in field goal percentage at .447. She has scored in double figures in all but one game so far this season, scoring 20 or more points five times.

Wright State (17-5, 9-1) extended its winning streak to eight with the two wins, making it the longest winning streak for the program in its 30-year Division I history. The Raiders have won 13 of their last 14 overall heading into a home contest at 4:30 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 4, against Northern Kentucky. The WSU men’s basketball team will take on Northern Kentucky at 7 p.m.

According to the WSURaiders.com website, fans are urged to wear black. The first 500 fans to the women’s game, and the first 5,000 for the men’s contest, will receive free T-shirts.
