Skyhawks third in Huelsman tourney

FAIRBORN — On May 13, teams came out in remembrance of Fairborn softball player Sarah Huelsman by playing in the annual Huelsman Memorial Tournament.

Fairborn lost the opener against Springfield, 9-7, but fought hard. Leading the `Hawks was senior Chloe Becraft and junior Jordan Wilson. They both went 2-for-4. Senior Taylor Rice had a three-run home run. Riley Davis, Kelsie Coleman, Ashlyn Baker, Hannah Borchert and Sophia Ceyler all had a hit each.

In the second game of the Huelsman tournament, Fairborn faced off against Xenia. Everyone in the Skyhawks’ line up had a hit for their final game of the year. Fairborn scored first as visitors, but Xenia jumped to an early 3-1 lead. Davis, Baker, Becraft and Coleman all went 2-for-4. Senior Bryanna McLean hit a two-RBI shot in the fifth to give Fairborn its lead. Taylor Rice, Jordan Wilson, Hannah Borchert all had a hit. Senior Kirsten George had a triple tonight for a big swing.

Senior Taylor Rice got the win with six strikeouts, finishing out the seniors’ careers with an 8-5 win.

Fairborn boys solid in GWOC tourney

TROY — As a Team the Fairborn boys track team finished fourth May 12 in the Greater Western Ohio Conference’s South Division and eighth in the National League. In the 300-meter hurdles, Omar Inman finished second in the GWOC South, third in the National League. In the 800-meter run, Jordan Greene was first in the GWOC South and second in the National League. The boys 1,600-meter relay team placed second in the GWOC South and second in the National League.

Beavers knock off Westerville South

BEAVERCREEK — No. 7-ranked Beavercreek upset Ohio’s fifth-ranked team, Westerville South, by a 25-19, 19-25, 20-25, 25-22, 16-14 score on May 13. Parker Mikesch (23 kills), Noah Buell (40 assists), Alan Fullenkamp (two aces and a pair of blocks) and Ricky Le (15 digs) all had solid games for Beavercreek (18-5). Westerville South falls to 17-6 with the loss.

Beavercreek heads south to take on No. 4-ranked Cincinnati Moeller next on Wednesday, May 17.

Lewis wins at Shadybowl

DeGRAFF — Fairborn veteran race driver Jim Lewis Jr. won the 25-lap Street Stock feature at Shadybowl Raceway on May 13. Lewis Jr. won in his family-owned Chevy Camaro, sponsored by Performance Paint. Shawn Stansell, Jacob Muncy, Buck Purtee and Rodney Roush finished second thru fifth. Stansell won the dash, with the heat win going to Roush. Stansell was the winner of the Hard Charger award sponsored by Ohlinger Automotive.

SW Ohio Track practices start

YELLOW SPRINGS — The Southwest Ohio Track Club summer program starts on May 30 at Yellow Springs High School. The practices are Monday, Tuesday and Thursday. A host of meets will take place this summer.

Practices for 7-12 year olds: 5-6 p.m.

Practices for 13 and older: 6-7:30 p.m.

The SWOTC includes elementary, middle school, high school, post collegiate and masters athletes. All are welcome. The SWOTC is a tax exempt and sanctioned program. Kids Fishing Derby May 20

BEAVERCREEK — Grab those fishing poles, bait and tackle and head over from 8-11:30 a.m. May 20 to Phillips Park (new location this year), 2132 Dayton-Xenia Road.

Beavercreek Parks, Recreation & Culture and McAfee Heating & Air are sponsoring the ninth annual Fishing Derby. Mister C will take the stage at 10:30 a.m. to do a Hair Raising Science program. Prizes will be awarded at 11 a.m. to the child who catches the smallest, largest and most fish. No pre-registration is required for this free event.

Jamestown Chamber golf outing in May

JAMESTOWN — The annual Jamestown Chamber of Commerce golf outing will take place Friday, May 19 at Sebastian Hills Golf Course, 1100 Knoll Haven Rd. in Xenia. The outing will start at 11 a.m., with registration opening at 10am. Come early to take advantage of the free driving range and putting green privileges, as well as getting a hot dog or two courtesy of Countryside Propane

Participants will be able to enjoy beverages and snacks, courtesy of the Chamber, and when the golf is over Kelley’s Café will be providing all participants and volunteers a wonderful meal at the golf course. The annual golf outing is the main fundraising activity for the Jamestown Area Chamber of Commerce which allows the Chamber to provide various activities, programs and scholarships to the Jamestown and surrounding communities.
