Weiss earns regional honor

FAIRBORN — Pitcher Ryan Weiss of the Wright State University baseball team was named to the Second Team All-Mideast Region team, June 14 by the American Baseball Coaches Association and Rawlings.

Weiss (South Elgin, Ill.), who was selected as a Freshman All-American last by Collegiate Baseball, was the Freshman of the Year in the Horizon League in 2017. He was also a First Team All-Horizon League honoree as he led the league with a 2.13 earned run average, tied for second with eight wins and was third in strikeouts (80), fourth in opposing batting average (.237) and sixth in innings pitched (88.2).

In league play, he tied for first in strikeouts (53), tied for second in wins (5) and was third in ERA (2.34), tied for fourth in innings pitched (57.2) and was fifth in opposing batting average (.230).

Weiss picked up a save in his collegiate debut at No. 10 Clemson on Feb. 17 and earned wins over South Carolina Upstate, Ohio, Valparaiso, Youngstown State, Illinois Chicago (UIC), and Northern Kentucky on three occasions. He struck out a season-high 10 in seven shutout innings at Northern Kentucky on April 29 and had eight strikeouts at UIC on May 13. Weiss was selected as the Horizon League Pitcher of the Week on May 22 as he struck out five in a home win over UIC on May 19.

Weiss is the 13th Raider all-time to receive All-Region honors in WSU’s 30-year NCAA Division I history, joining Brian Anderson (First Team 1992 and 1993), Jon Sbrocco (First Team 1993), Joe Smith (Second Team 2006), Ross Oeder (First Team 2007), Justin Parker (Second Team 2007), Jake Hibberd (Second Team 2011), Tristan Moore (Second Team 2011), Michael Schum (Second Team 2011), Andrew Elliott (First Team 2014), Michael Timm (Second Team 2014), Jesse Scholtens (First Team 2016) and Ryan Fucci (Second Team 2016).
