GREENE COUNTY AREA — Hey! Wasssup?

Enjoying your summer? Raining or not, are you finding ways to have a good time?

That’s pretty much what summer is about.

It’s a time when school-aged kids can unwind and have fun, whether it’s on the ball diamonds of Beavercreek’s Rotary Park or Fairborn’s Fairfield Park, on the Greene County area’s many tennis courts, at the Evans Acres ball fields in Xenia, on the water of a local pool or in a boat on a local stream …. you get the idea, it’s a time to go out and have fun!

You make the memories.

I’ll record them in history.

I’ll preserve them in the pages of our Greene County newspapers — the Xenia Gazette; the Fairborn Daily Herald; and our weekly, the Beavercreek News-Current — if you’ll let me.

With all the area organizations out there tirelessly hosting sporting contests, it’s tough for this one-person Sports Department to get everywhere to cover your event.

Call me. And as soon as I can, I’ll be there.

Newspapers are the creators of stuff for your family scrapbooks. It’s hard to stick a soundbite in a photo album, or to take a video of your loved one’s inside-the-park home run over to grandma’s house for her to see it. But snip the article out of the paper, and slip it into a scrapbook and she’ll see it.

Memories of my sports days are still in my family’s scrapbooks. I was the next Bjorn Borg of the tennis courts. And I was the next Babe Ruth of the ball diamonds (or so I thought).

But the sportswriters for my hometown newspaper (that paper’s name will go unmentioned to protect their present staffers, who weren’t there to mangle my name), they just could not consistently spell B-o-m-b-a-t-c-h.

Bornhatch

Bimbach

Birnback

Bombeck

… and some variations that I can’t put in the newspaper. (Rhymes with itch) They just couldn’t get it right.

I’ll get it right.

I know the frustration of reading a story that says how the doubles team of Jeff Jones and John Birnbach claimed a straight-set victory. Accuracy is important, and I’m human. Mistakes happen. But if I should spell your name wrong, I’ll re-print it in the paper until it’s right.

The planet’s scrapbooks need the proper spellings.

Historians who may dig up your story out of a time capsule some day. They’re not going to want to repeat the glory days of Jahn Bimbotch, when the name should be John Bombatch, are they? Nope. Accuracy is important, and I will accurately portray your sports highlight for generations upon generations to enjoy well into the future. (Or at least until that time when information and records are simply beamed into our foreheads and permanently inscribed into our personal nanochip brains. I’m thinking of you, future time capsule openers!)

Give me a call. Tell me when your team plays its games, or swims its meet, or runs its race. Tell me when you race next at Kil-Kare or Shady Bowl or anywhere else (legally, of course).

I’ll do my best to be there, and I’d like to help make your own scrapbook memories. I’m here to preserve your memories.

With the right spelling of your name, of course!

Call me.
