FARMVILLE, Va. — The Wright State University men’s soccer team used three second-half goals to end its 2017 exhibition slate with a 3-0 win Aug. 19 at Longwood University. Alec Philippe scored twice in the first minutes of the second half to seal the win.

“Alec Philippe had two big-time goals for us, and Ian Molfenter snuck a third goal to seal it,” said WSU coach Bryan Davis.

There was no scoring in the first 45 minutes as Longwood took four shots to two for the Raiders.

During the second half, the Raiders had two goals in the first 15 minutes as Philippe took an Eric Hutton cross for a header into the bottom right corner at 56:10. Philippe notched his second goal off a rebound at 64:06. Molfenter picked up the Raiders’ third goal with a rebounder at 85:50.

“The second half, we settled down, finding our game and our identity to come away on top,” said Davis. “Our standards here are very high and, although the complete 90-minute output needs work, the 90-minute effort was great from every single guy.”

Wright State picked up the shooting pace with eight shots in the second half, limiting Longwood to two. Tim Gyenis and Charles Wolfe split the shutout in the nets for the Raiders, each playing 45 minutes. Philippe ended with three shots as did Luke Treadway. Molfenter posted two shots.

After winning 5-0 at UNC Asheville earlier in the week, the Raiders have outscored their opponents 8-0 in preseason play. Seven players have scored for WSU, with Philippe leading with two goals.

“It’s always good to finish preseason on a good note,” said Davis. “After a tough first half, playing two games in 48 hours while our opponent was seven-days fresh, we really struggled to find our footing. Longwood is a good team. We knew it would be a very challenging game for us, and the unbalanced rest made it really difficult.”
