DAYTON — Dayton Boat Club will host an open house 5:30-6:30 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 6, club’s boathouse, 3040 E. River Road to introduce area middle school and high school students and their families to the sport of competitive rowing.

Visitors can tour the boathouse and launch dock, as well as talk with coaches and rowers. Those who wish to join the team can enroll and begin practice that weekend.

“Rowing is an excellent sport for nearly any type of athlete, and this is a nationally recognized high school program,” said head coach Mike Miles, who brought competitive rowing to Dayton in 1991 and has coached Dayton-area rowers to national championships, full college scholarships and the U.S. national team. “It’s also great for strength, speed and endurance training for other sports.”

No experience is necessary; the club’s novice coaches specialize in building technique and strength in preparation for varsity rowing. The team competes in several regional regattas every fall and spring, as well as USRowing national qualifying events.
