Carroll falls in double OT

WEST CHESTER — Dayton Carroll High School’s boys soccer team had its season come to an abrupt end on Saturday afternoon Oct. 28 at Lakota West High School with a 2-1 double overtime loss to Anderson in the Division I Region 4 Southwest District 4 championship game.

With 7:19 remaining in the second overtime period, Anderson’s Brodie Sallows curled a free kick from about 20-yards over the wall and just past the outstretched hands of goalie Kade Greer into the upper right corner of the net.

“It was very unfortunate,” said Patriots coach Scott Molfenter. “You knew it was going to come down to something like that.”

The teams traded blows in the first half, but neither side was able to break away from the other in an evenly matched contest that pitted two teams that had lost only one game each throughout the regular season.

It was only the third time all season Carroll (16-2-2) conceded multiple goals, having kept 15 clean sheets along the way.

The Patriots went on top early when just six minutes into the contest Charlie Thompson scored his 10th goal of the year.

Sean Dosedel floated a free kick into the Anderson box that Thompson chested down, spun and knocked past diving Redskins’ goalie Billy Southard.

“I was going to pass it to (Connor Osterholt) but I just…” said Thompson, finishing the thought with a shrug, emotional following the loss.

Anderson (19-1-0) tied it with 7:17 remaining in the half.

Sallows found Jack Vogele making a run through the center of the defense whose shot sailed past a diving Greer.

Both teams had multiple chances to win it in regulation and overtime, none closer than Chris Moon’s header that banged off the crossbar midway through the second OT.

“You just feel bad for the seniors,” said Molfenter. “I’m proud of the guys. We’re out here playing guys two, three, four times bigger than us.”

Added Thompson, “I just wasn’t ready for it to end.”

The Redskins move on to the Region 4 semifinals against St. Xavier, a 3-2 winner Saturday over Loveland. The semifinal match will be at 7 p.m., Wednesday Nov. 1 at Monroe High School.
