Late goal sends Beavers to state semis

LEBANON — Dominic Calabrese did it again.

A year after scoring the game-winning goal in a regional final against Springboro, the Beavercreek senior forward struck again, propelling the Beavers to a second straight Division I state semifinal, notching the deciding goal in a 3-2 win over Cincinnati power Anderson, Nov. 4.

Beavercreek will play Dublin Coffman at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 8 at London High School in one state semi.

Calabrese took a pass from senior Evan Williams, dribbled a couple steps in the box, and turned left and fired into the far side of the net from a tough angle with 10:30 left.

The Anderson keeper had no chance.

“Evan Williams did great work,” Calabrese said. “I managed to get a little flick. It was one of those things I didn’t think about. I just hit. I can’t describe the feeling. I’m so happy we get another chance to get to that state final game. It was a great team effort.”

The Beavercreek defense shut down the Redskins the rest of the way in winning for the 20th time this season.

Coach John Guiliano wasn’t shocked to see Calabrese nail another trophy-clinching goal.

“He’s that kind of player,” Guiliano said. “He’s good at putting the ball away.”

Calabrese had a hand, er uh, foot in another goal. Tied 1-1 with 21:29 left, he was on a run inside the box and was taken down, leading to a penalty kick. Senior Joshua Fleck took the PK, and easily beat the keeper, who dove the wrong way.

Fleck also scored Beavercreek’s first goal, taking a long throw from senior Vincent Peden and heading it in three minutes into the game.

Anderson (20-2) tied it four minutes later as an unmarked Jack Voegele took a throw in and knocked it in. Seven minutes after the PK, Anderson’s Brevin Andreadis got his noggin on a centering pass from Sam Krunkemoeller to tie it at 2-all at halftime.

Despite the teams combining for 24 shutouts and giving up just 29 goals between them, ‘Creek coach John Guiliano was expecting a shootout.

“They scored 83 goals on the season, 85 now. We scored 107,” he said.

Anderson nearly took the lead three minutes into the second half when Jay Buscani got free in the box, but keeper Liam Dipple made a sliding body save. He was hurt on the play, and exited with a knee injury — the second time he had to leave the game due to injury. Backup Garrett Arbogast made three saves in helping preserve the win.

Guiliano was unsure of Dipple’s status for the state semifinal, but is confident in Arbogast and his entire team.

“The kids understand what their roles are,” he said.
