Whicker named to CoSIDA

CEDARVILLE — Cedarville University Lady Jacket defender Hannah Whicker was voted to the 2017 College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) Academic All-District Women’s Soccer Team on Nov. 9

First-team Academic All-District honorees advance to the CoSIDA Academic All-America Team ballot where first, second, and third-team All-America honorees will be announced in December.

Whicker joins Jacoby Ziegler (2013, 2015) as the only Cedarville players to earn the district honor. The junior from Crawfordsville, Ind. carries a 3.90 grade-point average as a nursing major. Whicker is one of four defenders on the all-district team, which also includes three midfielders, three forwards and two goalkeepers.

CU heads west for opener

CEDARVILLE — The Cedarville University Yellow Jackets men’s team travels to St. Louis this weekend to play in the Great Miami Athletic Confernce /Great Lakes Valley Conference Crossover, hosted by Maryville University.

Cedarville plays the host Saints at 4 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 11 in the 2017-18 season opener. The Jackets then meet up with Truman State at 2 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 12.

Fans can watch the Maryville contest on the GLVC Sports Network and follow both games on SIDEARM Stats. Last season in the Don Callan Classic, the same four teams competed. The Jackets defeated Maryville, 80-68, a day after dropping an 82-70 decision to Truman.

Wilberforce splits doubleheader

WILBERFORCE — In a battle of Bulldogs, Wilberforce and Fisk University provided a high-energy game for students, fans and alumni during the #ISSA Homecoming weekend, Sunday, Nov. 5.

The Wilberforce Lady Bulldogs defeated the Lady Bulldogs of Fisk University, 82-64. Junior guard, Jamee Denman led all scorers with 25 points, hitting on 5-of-7 shots from behind the arc. Denman was followed by Alexandria Shealey’s 14 points, Brittany Wells with 13 points and 10 assists, and Angelice Kinney with 10 points and eight rebounds. The Wilberforce women shot 47 percent from the field, while forcing 27 turnovers.

The WU men’s basketball Bulldogs cut a 20-point deficit, although losing to the Bulldogs of Fisk University by a shot at the buzzer. Wilberforce’s Lajuane Marshall scored a career-high 32 points in 28 minutes of play. Marshall, who led all scorers, was followed by Austin Daniels with 13 points, Malik Breckenridge with 11 points and Berruche Archille with 10 points.

Bucs in Flyin’ to the Hoop

DAYTON — Xenia High will be among the area and national teams participating in the annual Flyin’ to the Hoop Invitational basketball showcase event.

The Buccaneers, led by junior Samari Curtis who is considered by the tournament as the pre-season fourth ranked junior in Ohio, are scheduled to play Olentangy Liberty at 1:15 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 13 at James S. Trent Arena, in Kettering.
