Local wrestlers advance at tourney

VANDALIA — Several county wrestlers advanced to the quarterfinals of the Greater Miami Valley Wrestling Association Holiday Tournament at Butler High School in Vandalia.

Early round action began Dec. 27 with quarterfinals, semifinals and finals today.

Greeneview freshman Teagan Hendricks, seeded third, is in the 106-pound quarters after a pair of byes and pin of Simon Kenton’s Landen Meadors in 2:56. Hendricks takes on Hilliard Bradley’s Deacon Sawchuk in the quarters.

Second-seeded Devan Hendricks advanced to the quarterfinals at 126 with a bye, a 3-1 win and a pin of Ryle’s Caleb Kish in 1:27. He will take on Hunter Donnan of Tecumseh, who defeated Xenia sophomore Tyler Bemrose, 8-5, in the third round.

Bellbrook’s Ben Sherrill, seeded third, advanced at 138 after a bye and technical falls of 17-2 and 17-1, the latter coming against Lucas Rodgers of Tecumseh. He takes on Cole Houser of Ben Logan in the quarters.

Xenia’s Peyton Bartley had the upset of the day, knocking off second-seeded Quentin Skinner of Buford, a state-placer last season. Bartley won in 3:46 and then advanced to the quarters with a 7-1 win over Moore Traditional’s Cody Melton.

Several other area wrestlers are competing in the consolation bracket with a chance to finish as high as third.
