Beavercreek spoils Xenia’s opener

Staff Report

XENIA — Beavercreek ran all over Xenia’s brand spanking new Veterans Field for 400 yards on its way to a 45-7 drubbing of the host Buccaneers. It was Xenia’s first regular season game on the new artificial turf layout, and many Buc fans would just assume that it never happened.

Battlin’ Beaver back Tim Bradshaw rushed for 190 yards and touchdown runs of 7, 4 and 5 yards, and his Beavercreek team didn’t attempt a pass until the second half.

Meanwhile, Xenia just never seemed able to get untracked. The Bucs defense couldn’t stop Beavercreek’s triple-option attack, and Xenia’s offense — especially its running game — had a lot of difficulties as well.

In 11 carries for the game, Xenia was held to minus-6 yards. Forced to play catchup, Xenia quarterback Danny Naylor completed 16 of 24 pass attempts for 153 yards, but two of those tries were intercepted.

Bellbrook 26, Waynesville 21

BELLBROOK — The Golden Eagles jumped on top early and hung on late to beat Waynesville 26-21, Friday.

In his first varsity start as quarterback, David Vine scored on touchdown runs of 8, 26 and 2 yards to help pace Bellbrook. The defense also scored on a fumble recovery.

Bellbrook’s defense set up the game’s first touchdown early. Tom Orbash made a diving interception of a Waynesville pass on the game’s second play, giving the Golden Eagles the ball on the Spartans 45-yard line.

A pass interference penalty on Bellbrook’s first play made the field even shorter, and six plays later Vine rumbled in from the eight-yard line. The Brady Tincher PAT made it 7-0.

The defense came up big again on the first play of the second quarter. Drew Ashurst sacked the quarterback, forcing a fumble. Rye Bennett picked it up and ran it back 12 yards for a touchdown and a 14-0 lead.

The Spartans took advantage of a Bellbrook fumble midway through the second and cut the score to 14-7 when QB Logan Bloom found receiver Logan Fruhwirth wide open in the end zone for a 28-yard touchdown.

Bellbrook held Waynsville on its first second-half possession and the ensuing punt went just 15 yards, giving the Golden Eagles the ball at the Waynesville 26-yard line.

Vine slithered thorugh the defense on the first play for a touchdown. A bad snap/hold led to a failed PAT and a 20-7 lead.

Waynesville got to within 20-14 after three on a 10-yard run by Bloom. The play was set up by a bad snap on a third-down play by Bellbrook on its own 36-yard line. Waynesville recovered on the 10.

Vine’s third TD with two minutes left gave the Golden Eagles a 26-14 lead. Waynesville scored with 1:07 left but Bellbrook’s Nick Barhorst recovered the ensuing onside kick.
