JAMESTOWN — Visiting Carroll took advantage of some solid serving and some youthful Greeneview miscues to claim a 25-22, 25-18, 25-19 win Wednesday at Greeneview High School. But the Patriots (3-6) had several miscues of their own, to let coach Seth Wilson know his club still has plenty of work to do.
“We’re still not playing to our best necessarily, but for the most part we’ve just got some things to clean up in general,” Wilson said. “We’re making a lot more errors than we should.”
Most of Greeneview’s points came off Carroll’s unforced errors. Unofficially, 42 of the Rams’ 59 total points were the result of Patriot unforced errors — deep serves or net serves, a few collisions, net violations, mishits.
“The team that makes the fewer unforced errors will usually win the game,” Wilson said. “We won as a team, though. Win or lose, I don’t want to single anyone out.”
A strong service game from Carroll’s Madison Mistovich (three aces), Olivia Wright and Sonja Kosir (two aces each), Abby Schrand, Mary Kate Fleisher and Samantha Keller (one ace apiece) kept Greeneview (1-7) on the defensive early and often.
Schrand came up with nine kills and a block, Fleisher added eight kills and Kosir had seven to lead the Carroll attack.
“Carroll served us off the court tonight,” Greeneview coach Amanda Stratton said. “Our serve receive was very weak tonight. That was disappointing, and definitely something we want to correct.”
Freshman middle hitter Ashley Schloss led Greeneview with four kills, freshman Caitlin Sweat finished with three kills and junior outside hitter Makayla Smith had two kills. Senior libero Valery Nix was credited with 15 digs and junior setter Brianna Siegfried dished out six assists.
“Honestly, they just have a really hard time finishing,” Stratton said, after a 15-minute talk in the locker room with her squad. “They’re great practice players. When they get in the game, they know what to do. They just can’t seem to piece it together and right now we’re still working on that.”
Stratton said she has six freshmen playing varsity at this time. Her youthful squad returns to Ohio Heritage Conference action today when they’ll host South Charleston Southeastern.
Carroll also returns to league action. They host Cincinnati Purcell Marian for a Greater Catholic League, Co-Ed Divisional match today.
