Fairborn can’t slow Viking ground game

FAIRBORN — Late in the third quarter, Miamisburg running back Tony Clark fumbled the ball after a handoff. Almost like magic, the ball bounced off the ground and right back into Clark’s arms, who turned the play into a 14-yard run.

It was that kind of night.

Everything went right for the Vikings as they got another Greater Western Ohio Conference South division win Friday night at Baker Memorial Stadium. They beat Fairborn 35-13.

Miamisburg had no trouble moving the ball in the first half. Its first possession of the game was a methodical seven-minute drive bolstered by a big offensive line and some smash-mouth running. They finished the first half with 146 yards rushing on 28 attempts. Clark had 84 yards on 13 carries.

Fairborn looked good in spurts. They had 150 yards passing in the game, but stalled drives and a few key mistakes kept the Hawks from gaining much momentum. Their first drive started on their own 22-yard line. They moved it all the way up to midfield before stalling. A fake punt attempt from Brent Grody was intercepted, giving the Vikings good field position.

Fairborn had some good defensive play early, like stopping the Vikings on a fourth-down play to get the ball back early in the second quarter, but they couldn’t put much together. Miamisburg (6-1, 2-0 GWOC) had 287 total yards in the win and nearly doubled Fairborn (1-6, 0-2 GWOC) in time of possession.

Down 14-0, the Skyhawks did march down the field 80 yards to get on the board with 4:28 left in the first half. A Wesley Watts turnover was overturned thanks to a pass interference call on the drive. Watts found junior Gracen Barhart from six yards out for the score.

Fairborn had a good drive to start the second half that stalled at the Miamisburg 42. The Vikings got their passing game involved along with their rushing attack to score on the ensuing drive.

Clark finished with 107 yards on 17 carries for the Vikings. Quarterback Jake Schoenberger had 104 yards passing on 8-for-11 passing attempts. He had two passing touchdowns.

The Skyhawks scored a late touchdown after Miamisburg botched its first punt of the game with 5:51 left to go. The snap went over the Miamisburg punter’s head, and Fairborn got the ball at the Vikings 35. KJ Redmon ran the ball 35 yards into the endzone on the ensuing snap. He finished with 50 yards in the game.

Fairborn will face the top passing attack in the GWOC when they face Lebanon 7 p.m. next Friday at James Van De Grift Stadium.
