XENIA — The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP) recently recommended that live attenuated influenz a vaccine (LAIV), also known as the “nasal spray” flu vaccine or FluMist, should not be used during the 2016–2017 flu season.

As a result of this recommendation, the CDC and the Ohio Department of Health (ODH) Immunization Program will not offer FluMist vaccine through the VFC program for the upcoming flu season. The ACIP continues to recommend annual [injectable] flu vaccination for everyone 6 months and older.

According to Missi Pollock, BSN, RN, and Immunization Program Manager at Greene County Public Health, “For the 2016-2017 Influenza vaccination season, Greene County Public Health will follow the guidelines as set by the CDC and ODH and not offer FluMist. In addition, it is our understanding that FluMist vaccine will not be available from the manufacturer this year. We will plan to offer injectable flu vaccination by appointment for all clients six months and older. We can bill many insurance companies and we offer competitive pricing for those who are uninsured. We will notify the public when influenza vaccine becomes available.”
