FAIRBORN – Mayor Dan Kirkpatrick has a challenge for the Fairborn community: to be a part of the Citywide Neighborhood Clean Up Day, Saturday, Sept. 10.

Activities for the day include the Adopt-a-Highway clean-up, and Fill-a-Bag, Plant-a-Flag event.

“This is a great opportunity, especially a week before the 20th anniversary run of the Air Force Marathon, for the citizens of Fairborn to come together and clean up our streets and neighborhoods,” said Kirkpatrick. “We are hopeful that all Fairborn citizens will get out and fill a bag of trash and plant the flag.”

The ‘Fill-a-Bag, Plant-a-Flag’ activity is to motivate citizens to simply clean up a portion of their street or neighborhood. The task is to fill a bag of trash, take a selfie holding the bag, deposit the bag in your trash can and head over to Christy’s Happy Scrapper and show the photo to get your flag.

Christy’s Happy Scrapper, 411 W. Main street, will be open 11 am – 4 pm on Saturday, Sept. 10 which is also the same day as the Downtown Fairborn Business Association’s community arts and crafts fair. Flags are limited to the first 100 who show their photo.

The Adopt-a-Highway program targets specified roadways in Fairborn that tend to collect a bit more litter and debris than other areas. This community service project enlists civic groups and organizations to clean up a designated area from a list of roadways maintained by the city three to four times a year. Numerous sections of roadway ranging from 0.05 to 1.2 miles have been identified as areas needing attention. The Fairborn Lion’s Club, the Meadowlands Sanctuary Neighborhood Working Group and the Mayor’s Beautification Committee have already selected roadways to clean up and more are still available. The City provides trash bags and other items, as needed, for the activity. For further information, please call 937-754-3098.

The mayor is encouraging all citizens to accept his challenge and make our streets litter free and our neighborhoods a little greener and cleaner, and continue to make Fairborn a beautiful place to call home.
