He is expected to be approved by the Xenia board of education during a special meeting 6:30 p.m. tonight.

Smitherman has been at Stebbins since 2008 and was selected as the Miami Valley Football Coaches Association Coach of the Year in 2014 and 2015. He was also selected as the 2015 Division II Southwest District High School Football Coach of the Year and he was nominated by the Associated Press for the OHSAA Sportsmanship, Ethics, and Integrity Award.

“We’re extremely excited to welcome Trace to the Buccaneer program and are looking forward to his wealth of knowledge, experience, and determination that he will bring to our student athletes,” Xenia Athletic Director Nathan Kopp said.

Prior to being the head coach at Stebbins, Smitherman served as a varsity football assistant coach at Beavercreek High School.

Smitherman received his degree from Central State University in business administration and computer science.
