Quiet weekend for state patrol

XENIA — Highways in Greene County were largely incident-free over the Labor Day weekend, as travelers statewide hit the road en masse.

According to Lt. Doug Eck of the Xenia Post of the Ohio State Highway Patrol, local officers wrote 393 traffic citations for various violations, including 14 OVIs and 93 seat belt tickets. Eck also noted that there were five crashes over the four-day weekend -Friday through Monday – but classified them as nothing serious.

“No one seriously hurt, no one killed,” Eck said. “We got some impaired drivers off the road, kept them from hurting themselves or anybody else. Typically we have more crashes over a four-day weekend. Crashes were down, but everything else is probably pretty standard.”

The quiet weekend comes as more than 1.5 million Ohioans were projected to travel over the holiday weekend, 88 percent of which by automobile, according to a AAA estimate. Travel numbers for Labor Day were projected to be the highest since 2008.

“Any time we have a weekend where we don’t send people to the hospital or to the morgue out of crashes, we consider that a good thing,” Eck said.
